"Do you have a pass?" asked the large man that stood at the side of the gate, he was wearing a shinny silver armor and was one of the several guards that stood near the wooden fence; I showed him the pass. "Dunno how you got it, but it's legit." he made a gesture, and the gates were opened. "Go ahead, good luck in coming back alive."

"Thanks." I whispered as the gates closed behind me; it was very early in the morning, there was barely any light, and the sun would soon rise in the horizon.

I looked up the almost non existent road, fully aware that the fence around this mountain was not meant to keep the dragon in, but traveling idiots out; the wrath of the creature had been spread through stories and folk tales very fast, whenever attacked, the dragon would devastate a nearby village; and since no one could seem to kill it, they chose to not attack it and see what happened.

In the end, the dragon stopped annihilating villages, though it would still cause a huge ruckus whenever it went out of the mountain; either way, I believe that when the dragon listens to my proposition, either it'll eat me in one gulp, or it'll laugh so hard the mountain will come down on the both of us.

And the damn mountain was huge, so I can imagine myself being flattened in so many different ways that I was actually thinking going back again.

But I didn't stop for even one second to continue all the way through the road.

By the time I reached the clearing that lead to the cave, it was midday.

Seeing that the dragon hadn't realized I was here just yet, I chose to take a small break and look around as I sat on a rock far enough from the cave for me to have an actual chance to begin running in case anything appears out from the cave.

There was about a two hundred yard separation between me and the cave; yet despite the distance I still felt tiny and puny just by the size of the entrance alone.

It was almost two hundred yards wide, and fifty tall; in front of the cave, there was a semicircular clearing of about three hundred feet in diameter, with nothing but dry soil between there and the forest; my guess was that the dragon had came and went so many times that no plant grew in that area anymore.

Once I had finished eating, I took the armor from within my backpack and stared at it for a moment, coming to the full realization that if the dragon wanted to kill me, the armor would no more than a sheet of paper protecting me against a blade.

And the sword? I had heard no normal sword could cut through the scales of such mighty beast; so considering mine was half rusted and not even sharp, my chances got even thinner.

I sighed; realizing that all that weight had been mostly a waste of my time and a useless weight to carry around; still, I had been lucky enough to not encounter any wild beast on my way here, so I chose to keep it.

Leaving my backpack where it was, I took the three foot long rusty sword and slowly walked towards the cave; not sneaking, but walking at the same pace one would take when going to the podium before being hung.

Standing at the very center of the entrance of the cave, I looked inside the suspiciously dark cave, seeing nothing nor no one there.

"Oh mighty dragon of the emerald river!" I claimed at full lung power, making sure not to enter the cave as I did; it was known that going into the personal living space of any beast could mean instant death no matter how peaceful your intentions were. "If you concede me with the honor, I wish to speak to thee!"

"Who dares to come to my land?" roared a voice from within, just the voice alone almost made my knees buckle; I saw two intense golden eyes stare at me from within the darkness.

"I...I am Jake of the guild of heroes from the village of Trittyu." I replied, not moving from the spot, seeing how the yellow eyes slowly moved toward me, though not coming out enough for there to be light that illuminated it.

"Why have you come here, Jake of the guild of heroes from the village of Trittyu?" it asked, I could feel those eyes pinning me on the spot.

"Well, I wish to become a Hero some day." I answered. "However, I have to real special treats, and no one wants me as anything more than a house slave." I paused for a second. "I was told by the master of the guild that if I ever were to make a familiar contract with a dragon, I was sure to become a hero."

"You are either very brave or very stupid." came the answer of the rumbling voice. "For someone like you to come here and attempt forming a familiar contract with a dragon." it continued to glare down at me. "Not only that, but you don't even try to hide your own weakness and foolishness." the glare did not stop for a second. "And with a rusty sword no less; why do you act like this?"

"Well, I figured that no matter how I said it I'd end up dead." I muttered. "So I thought that coming straight out with the plain and painful truth would spare me the trouble of coming up with a better way to say it."

"Very well, I shall allow you to form a familiar pact with me." it said.

"Then sorry for wasting your t..." I froze as the words reached my brain. "What?"

"I said I agree." came the answer. "However, were you ever to even consider me less than an equal, you will die where you stand."

"Excuse me?" I said, too perplexed to feel even the slightest bit afraid for my words. "You agree?"

"So it was foolishness after all." it sighed. "In simple terms, you amuse me." the dragon explained. "I've encountered hundreds if not thousands of heroes, and this is the first time I meet someone such as yourself, Jake of the guild of heroes from the village of Trittyu."

For a very long second, I gazed up at the golden eyes, had it been possible, my jaw would have fallen off my skull; my brain was still processing what this outcome meant.

"So you wont eat me?" I said.

"No." it bluntly answered, as if humored by my reaction.

"Nor kill me?" I added.

"No." it repeated. "I will not harm you in any way unless you think of me as anything less than an equal."

"Ok..." I replied. "So what now?"

A very long second of awkward silence came.

"Shouldn't I be the one asking that?" the dragon finally said, lowering it's head almost until its massive eyes were at level with mine; I didn't know how, maybe it was the fact that I was standing out directly under the rays of the sun, but the only thing I could see were it's deep golden eyes. "Honestly, this is the first time I've met someone so stupid." it let out a long sigh, it was powerful enough for me to feel it as a hot and humid breeze. "So are you going to do the familiar spell or not?"

"Oh, yeah..." I went for my pocket, and took out the small spell that the guild master had given me. "I was told this should do the trick."

"Do you know how to use it?" asked the dragon.

"Maybe?" I replied, making my ignorance a bit too obvious as I remembered the master of the guild had not told me the specifics of using spells of this sort.

"You're making me consider the *eat you up* option." the dragon muttered. "Though my guess is you taste like soap and dirt, so I'll pass." it sighed. "Ok, I'll do the familiar spell."

"Really?" I asked in disbelief. "Can you actually do that?"

"I'm a dragon." the creature bluntly answered. "I can summon rain, create fire, freeze water and do plenty more magic; do you actually think I can't do a simple familiar spell?"

"Not that." I interrupted. "I was asking if you knew how to do the wizard version of the familiar spell."

"Wizard version?" for the first time, the dragon seemed confused.

"Didn't you know?" I asked. "The familiar spell is different among the species; because of the fact that the effects differ greatly, it's suggested to use the wizard version for anyone new with this sort of things."

"I won't use the wizard version." the dragon replied. "The spell we dragons pass down from generation to generation is not as feeble and weak as what humans use." its tone was dead serious. "It's deep and powerful to an extent that might as well escape your comprehension."

"That's exactly why I suggest we use the wizard version." I replied. "It's simple and weak, but it's a start; latter on a stronger version can be applied." I paused for a second. "Besides, if we use the wizard version, it can be easily removed in case we don't want to keep it."

"Are you implying you might end up not wanting me as your familiar?" the beast snarled, my blood froze as I most likely lost all color on my face. "Because a dragon will never turn back on its word."

"No... not at all..." I stuttered, unable to actually talk coherently now that my body was as stiff as a stone statue. "Please... go ahead and cast the spell."

"That's better." the dragon muttered, not moving from where it was, and not letting me actually see anything else but its eyes. "Come closer so I can begin."

I did as asked, and slowly approached the shadow that represented the inside of the cave; I'm pretty sure there was some sort of spell involved, because even then the only thing I could see of the dragon were its eyes, I took another step, and found an extremely powerful force pushing me back, avoiding me from entering into the shadow; -A barrier?- I thought as I felt the air, oddly enough, I couldn't seem to go into the shadow of the cave.

"That's right." the dragon uttered. "This barrier keeps me sealed inside, and doesn't allow humans to disturb me."

"How do you eat?" I asked.

"I need not to eat." was the reply. "Since I'm a being of magic, unless I move about, I only need some of the energy that's in the trees and plants around this area" it let out a long sigh. "Now place your hand as deep as you can, I shall commence the spell."

I pushed as hard as I could into the shadow of the cave, but I wasn't able to move it more than one or two inches deeper, and just that was taking me all I had.

Still, I felt as the warmth from the dragon's body approached my hand, and after a couple of seconds, I felt the warm fur of it's snout as it barely touched my hand for a fraction of a second.

But that instant alone was more than enough.

In the blink of an eye, the very instant my skin touched the scales, a bolt of blue and green lightning jumped from somewhere between the eyes of the creature and straight to my chest; my whole body became rigid as I couldn't move an inch, pain flowing through me with an increasing strength for every passing second.

<Relax.> whispered a voice into my mind. <It'll be over soon.>

I did as it told me, and the pain slowly withered away.

I felt as if a huge amount of energy was flowing through my very core, a sensation that felt uncomfortably warm and almost burned, yet soothed and calmed me.

Then, it all vanished and I fell on my back, seemingly extremely tired and barely even able to move.

"That should do it." uttered the dragon as I saw the tip of its snout being bathed on light. "The barrier banished too." I heard a long sigh. "It's good to be free again."

"Free?" I asked, laying on my back on the dirt, still a bit too tired to move.

"I was sealed up in this cave about a hundred years ago." the dragon said, still not going out of the cave, only the snout peeked outside. "The man who sealed me said that only forming a pact with someone with his blood could free me."

"His blood?" I said, and saw as the head of the dragon came out into the light, it was like that of a wolf, large enough for me be easily swallowed whole, with whiskers on the side of it's muzzle and deer like horns on the back; fur as white as snow covered it, so pure that under the sunlight it was almost blinding.

"It took me quite some time to find you." it looked down at me with those large eyes, eyes of a deep golden that were at the very least two feet wide. "I had thought you'd be some cocky hero of the sort by now, but much to my surprise you were a slave boy." it snorted a bit, blowing hot and humid air into me. "Sorry if I deceived you back then, the same spell that sealed me didn't allow me to speak of my real identity."

"Elaine?" I said, my eyes wide open in surprise as the dragon's voice was a perfect match of that of the girl I remembered.

"The one and only." she replied with a bit of a proud tone. "Never thought the girl you saved was a dragon, now did you?"

"How did you...?" I began to ask, sitting down a bit. "Wasn't it that the barrier didn't let you go outside?"

"Indeed." she answered, lowering her muzzle and almost tickling me on the belly. "However, I used several spells to create an astral body of my own, with which I searched for the heir of that hero's blood." she paused for a second, staring down at me, to then close its eyes. "Something like this."

"Hello." I turned my head and almost jumped as I saw Elaine standing right there, wearing the same ragged clothes, with the same green hair and golden eyes. "Surprising isn't it?" I looked at the dragon with the closed eyes and back at her. "While I'm like this, my body is in a state similar to sleeping, I can't have my consciousness on two bodies at the same time."

She approached me, and touched my arm as she crouched, I felt some energy flow into me through her, enough for me to stand up.

"So how come you can touch things?" I asked, the sensation of her skin was as real as that of any other person. "I thought astral forms were more like ghosts."

"That's for the weak ones." she laughed. "If enough energy is used, an astral form can be as real as any other." she paused as she seemed to be thinking for a second. "Though when you become solid, whatever damage is made to this form is passed onto the real body as well." she let out a long sigh as she placed her hands on her hips. "Back then I thought I'd need to begin using spells on those bastards." she chuckled. "Maybe as dogs they'd learn not to mess with a dragon."

"It's still hard to believe you're a dragon." I muttered as I stared at her and then back at the dragon.

"Oh well, from now on you'll have to deal with that." she replied with a grin in her face. "P.a.r.t.n.e.r." she stared at me for a second. "Do you feel anything odd?"

"Odd?" I said. "Why do you ask?"

"Whenever a dragon makes a contract, it lends a huge amount of energy to the contractor." she said as she approached me. "Most heroes that have a dragon as a familiar have a special ability that was solely made because of the contract." she touched my ears for a moment, as if inspecting them; I on the other hand, was feeling rather awkward having her inspect my head. "Things like suddenly being able to talk with animals, or using lightning without the need of a spell..." she paused. "There we go." she tapped my ears. "I knew something was odd." her eyes opened wide. "Uh oh."

"What do you mean uh oh?" I asked; I moved my hands towards my ears and felt them, I gasped as I realized they were a tad pointier, yet still changing under my touch; I stared back at Elaine. "What's going on?"

"Seems the changes went physical." she sighed. "It's rare, but sometimes there are changes on the body as well." she stared at me for a moment. "At least you now seem a bit more elvish."

Suddenly, her body glimmered and seemed to become more transparent almost like a mist vanishing in the morning; a second latter, she disappeared, and the dragon opened its eyes to look at me.

"Yep, you're changing alright." she said as she continued all the way out of the cave. "It should be over within a couple minutes."

The dragon was not like those I had seen on books and heard from myths; it was long and without wings, almost like a serpent; its body was probably thirty yards in length, with the same deep white fur all over, though with a patch of fluffy deep green fur running all the way down its spine, and with a puff of it at the end of the tail.

Her paws were similar to that of a cat, though with thumbs, and large enough to easily grab me and reduce my body to nothing larger than a small dog; with claws that were of a pure white, yet seemed so sharp I was certain they could cut metal with the slightest of efforts.

To be honest, the sight itself made me ignore the growing pain on my back for a while; until it began to become an intense sensation of someone wanting to pull my spine out from behind.

I let out a scream as I doubled in pain, the sensation of warmth that I had felt before came back, but with such strength I could swear I was burning.

"Oh gods." Elaine hurried to approach as she saw me fall to the ground. "Relax, try to focus into ignoring the pain." she seemed both stunned and horrified. "Concentrate, it should be over soon." I could clearly see this had taken her by surprise as well.

Elaine spoke something else, but everything had been silenced by the pain, I could feel the presence of the dragon looming above me, and I also knew it was using its powers to ease the pain, but it was still mind numbing.

I felt as two bulges on my back began to grow, it was as excruciating as someone attempting to make a stick go through your ribs, though from the inside; I rolled and screamed, cuddling into a fetal position as my eyes were wide open, tears running down as it was far more than any pain I had ever felt.

The pressure built up, with every passing second, and the pain increased with it; yet I could not fall unconscious, it was like some prank from the changes, I'd have to endure every second of it.

Then, I felt it release all in a second, two bat like wings sprouted out from my back and stretched out; I couldn't see what color they had, nor could I know how large they were; the only thing I was sure off was that they were there; but I couldn't care much, as the sensations continued, the pressure now building in the base of my spine.

Just as before, the pain increased as the pressure began to build up; I was sure something else was changing in my body, but right now I was solely focused on the pain on my back.

Seconds latter, I was certain a tail sprout out, yet immediately after that, the pain focused on other parts of my body, mainly my arms and legs.

My skin burned, and I felt the bones of my feet and hands were snapping and reshaping; with my eyes, I saw as dark green scales covered my hands, which soon turned into something more similar to green gauntlets, yet kept the same human-like shape, every single articulation in it had been reinforced, and the tip of the fingers now had pitch black claws that seemed as sharp and deadly as that of a dragon.

I'm not certain as to what was going on with my feet, but I was sure as well that I heard my boots being ripped to shreds.

After that, all the pain swept away in an instant; it took me by surprise, and I almost fell unconscious on the spot, but the worried feeling that I was receiving through the energy Elaine was using on me somehow kept me awake.

For a long while, I remained there, panting for air, uncertain as to how or why I had changed, yet so exhausted I could not move.

"Are you ok?" Elaine broke the silence.

"Been better." I replied, too exhausted to even move; I couldn't even see what had changed aside from my hands, though my energy was rapidly returning. "What happened?"

"Seems one of your ancestors was a dragon, probably from that hero who sealed me up." she sighed. "The contract awoke that blood within you." she added. "Luckily you didn't completely turn into a dragon, I doubt your body would have survived the change."

"Has this ever happened before?" I wondered.

"I've only heard about it." she replied. "People that have the blood of a dragon yet were born with the form of a human." she sighed. "For what the stories said, once the blood awoke, they'd most likely die."

"That's good to hear." I replied, slowly sitting as I looked at my hands, and then at my feet; the feet had turned into something more like the claws of a bird, though not flexible enough to grab anything with them; the scales ran up all the way until the knees, and the feet seemed as deadly as my hands. "What have I turned into?" I asked, continuing to take a closer look at my arms, the scales came to a halt at the elbows, as if I was wearing long sleeved gloves.

"I think that's not the most worrying part." Elaine said, and with a movement of her snout, a flat reflective surface appeared in front of me.

I jumped to my feet as I saw my reflection, I was almost entirely a completely different person.

I was almost a full foot taller, my body seemed slightly stronger, and my hair was long and of a deep black color, almost as if instead of hair, I had shadows on my head, nearly reaching my hips, but it seemed wild and uncontrolled.

My face was slightly different too; for starters, my ears were quite similar to those of an elf, long and pointy and aimed backwards, I had two patches of scales running down my cheeks, with a color slightly lighter than that of my hands and feet; my features seemed a bit older, by four or five years; and I had deep red eyes that were of such intense and bloody color I shivered with just looking at them.

But what took me by surprise were the wings and tail.

The wings were like those of a bat, with the same deep green hue as the other scales; I could feel them adding weight on me, and as I attempted to stretch them out, I lost my sense of balance and almost fell back; the wings were almost six feet wide each, though folded they almost vanished from view as somehow they completely flattened against my back.

And last but not least, the tail.

It was almost four feet long, and instead of the deep green scales, it had fur of the similar color, ending in a puff of black; it highly resembled a miniature version of Elaine's tail, and it seemed to move with a will of its own; I focused for a second, and saw and felt with shock and surprise as it twitches a bit, brushing against the floor.

"What the hell!?" were the first words that left my throat as I stared at myself on the mirror; despite being what would most likely be called a freak of nature, I couldn't avoid but notice that my new form somehow seemed elegant and even magnificent. "If someone sees me like this..." I feared the worst, certainly, I'd have ran away from such ferocious looking being if it weren't my own reflection.

"Don't worry." Elaine hurried to say as the invoked mirror vanished into thin air. "We dragons can shape shift, I believe you should be able to do that as well." she approached me and placed her muzzle on top of my head, I felt as a rush of images and sensations came into my head. "Focus on that." she muttered as she took a step back to watch.

I closed my eyes and followed the sensations that had been passed onto me; and immediately, after, I felt my body began to change.

My wings withdrew and my tail shrunk, my body lost height and mass as my hair became short, my hands lost the scales as the same thing happened to my feet; not more than five minutes after, I opened my eyes to look down at my hands, they were back to what they used to be.

"Remember that you can stay like that for a certain amount of time." I looked up to see the green haired girl version of Elaine standing there, though now wore clothes more fit for traveling. "If you practice enough, you should be able to sustain it for days at a time." she made a gesture with her hand for me to follow; despite not having boots, I did not feel the floor was either too hard nor cold.

"Where are we going?" I asked.

"Well, since I doubt you'll return to the guild, I think we should head out to the mountain of dragons." she said with a smile as she turned back towards me. "It's the place where all dragons learn how to control their powers." she laughed a bit. "Though I'll make sure to teach you along the way."

With that said, my life was turned upside down; but I was certain that it would be for the better.

Or at least that was what I hoped, for there would be plenty of trouble along the way.
part 2 out of two of a story I was kinda commissioned by :iconravnicrasol: he gave me the idea and I wrote it down for self amusement.

I wanted this piece to be shorter, but it came out way too long, longer than anything I've posted in fact.

I will eventually make a series out of it, though right now I'm too occupied to do that.
